What is the difference between “Hotfix” and “Flat Back“ Swarovski rhinestones ?
To the back of each Swarovski Hot Fix crystal by the factory is attached a heat activated glue that melts at about 340 to 375 degrees and it melts and bonds itself to the material when you apply it with the Hot Fix Tool.
The Hot Fix crystals are applied using a heat applicator tool like a household iron, heat press or a specialized tool like a The Professional Touch. The Hot Fix type of crystals are used usually for fabrics.
Silver Foil Back crystals look exactly the same as the Hot Fix stones but they have no glue on the back, so they must be applied with regular craft glue but they usually cost a couple cents less per stone than the Hot Fix variety. This tipe of crystals are usualy used to crystallize hard surface items. You can use them to decorate your cell phones, i-Pods, cameras, and computers.
So what Kind Of Crystals To Buy..
If you are going to crystallize items with low melting temperatures such as plastic, nylon, rayon etc. you should purchase the silver foil back crystals and apply them with glue.
The better choice of crystallizing items with a high melting temperature are the Hot Fix crystals.
Rhinestones can be applied with various tools and methods.
